From the book collection of Stanislaw Filibert Fleury (stamps, signatures). Monumental history of Lithuania and life work of Theodor Narbutt (1784-1864), amateur historian, researcher and popularizer of Lithuania's past, bibliophile, collector, translator, folklorist, social activist, engineer and military officer. Covers history from the earliest times to the death of Sigismund Augustus. Vol. 1 discusses Lithuanian mythology and beliefs, reconstructing them based on the Greco-Roman system. In later sections, the author focused primarily on political events, devoting little space to social and economic relations. The appendices included source editions and discussions of curiosities that were digressions to the main argument (e.g., "On Teutonic beards"). Narbutt's vision of Lithuanian history grew out of a deep interest in the culture of these lands and his search for folklore. It was based on the a priori assumption of state and cultural distinctiveness, the manifestations of which he repeatedly emphasized. The offered work had a great impact on the formation of Lithuanian consciousness and culture in the 19th century, becoming an important historical source. The lithographed illustrations include portraits of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, as well as maps and battle plans (including the Battle of Grunwald). Impressive period binding: brown half-leather, flat spines with embossed title, volume numbering and ornamentation with floral motifs, green marbled paper on faces. Stamps and signatures of Stanislaw Filibert Fleury (1858-1915), photographer, painter, famous documentalist of Vilnius and its daily life, as well as the monuments and architecture he was passionate about, art collector and bibliophile. Discoloration of the k., minor tears and creases of the split plates. Very good condition overall. Very rare. An impressive set.
