Lot description Show orginal version
A collection of about 120 documents from 1899-1965.

An extensive archive on the private life and professional work of Jan Hoplinski (until 1934 Burdzinski). Born in Bohorodczany, he graduated from a gymnasium in Kolomyia, then stayed in Pokucie, where he was involved in folklore and collecting artwork (the collection includes a 1902 letter from the Dzieduszycki Museum in Lviv thanking him for the ammonite he sent). In 1911 he settled in Cracow, where he became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts. After World War I, he briefly worked as a teacher in Wloclawek, then returned to Krakow, where he remained affiliated with the Academy there until the end of his life (first working as a library custodian, then teaching painting techniques at the conservation department). Among other things, he wrote a textbook "Paints and Painting Binders", which is still valued today, and was a highly respected specialist and educator (until his retirement in 1961), an important figure in the local artistic community (as evidenced by the offered collection). The archive includes personal documents (birth certificate, school certificates, marriage certificate, military booklet, change of name document, letters from the occupation period) and an unusually extensive collection of various documents relating to the course of his professional career (dominant among them are certificates and various letters from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow and the pre-war Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment and, after 1945, the Ministry of Culture). On the documents of the Academy of Fine Arts , numerous signatures of esteemed artists (Weiss, Pienkowski, Axentowicz, Szyszko Bohusz, Mehoffer, Pautsch, and after the war Eibisch, Fedkowicz, Pronaszko, Wejman, Rzepinski). In addition, letters of thanks for donated gifts from the National Museum in Cracow (with signatures of F. Kopera), letters with autographs of Karol Estreicher, Wiktor Zin, Jerzy Banach. A separate group is made up of state documents, such as the diploma of awarding the Golden Cross of Merit (with the signature of Slawoj Składkowski), professorial appointments (with the signature of Boleslaw Bierut). The archive also includes private correspondence from Adam Siemianowicz (painter, dean of the painting department), two portrait silhouettes of Hoplinski, an etching by Jerzy Pazdanowski with a dedication to Hoplinski. A separate group is made up of letters from the second half of the 19th century addressed to the authorities of the School of Fine Arts, with complaints from students about mistreatment by the staff (among them, complaints regarding Jan Rembowski and St. Kuczborski from 1902; a complaint from 1874 signed, among others, by A. Tondos and K. Pochwalski; denunciation of Ludomir Szpadlowski in 1880 in connection with his participation in the unveiling of Gen. Bem's monument in Hungary and suspicions of conspiratorial activities). Minor tears, fold marks, paper yellowed, condition of most documents good.
