Lot description

Wyspiański Stanisław/ Homer's Iliad. Pomor-Gniew/ Krakow 1903/ published by Stanislaw Wyspianski/ in Uniwersytecki Printing House, Altenberg's bookstore Lwow/ binding, half-leather according to Stanislaw Wyspianski's design/ p.55/ 11 illustrations in the text/ very good condition-, a restored piece (small losses on the spine filled, added facing boards), ownership stamps in front of the text and on p.34-35

Luxurious publisher's binding, half leather. Art Nouveau composition designed by Stanislaw Wyspianski. On the face of the front cover, in its central part, at the foot of the bluebells, a massive signature of the author (SW); the cover is moreover decorated with bilingual inscriptions, from which Wyspiański, having made the shape of the letters similar to the Latin and Greek alphabets, created a kind of written message to posterity. The cinnabar color of the letters engraved with a goose feather makes them look like they were reproduced with clotted human blood (and there is no shortage of that in Homer, after all); the spine with embossed and gilded titulature; gilded page trims.[written from: Now Cover. T.I, Jan Straus, p.218].

Bibliophilic edition of Homer's Iliad translated by Juliusz Słowacki a with exquisite illustrations, color cover and column arrangement of the text by Stanisław Wyspiański. Wyspianski created the illustrations for The Iliad at the request of Lucjan Rydel, who translated the work in 1896.They were originally published in the "Illustrated Weekly" in October and November 1896.After some changes, they went into the offered book edition. Wyspianski included 11 of his illustrations in this edition. This edition is one of the most beautiful books of Polish Art Nouveau. A bibliophilic rarity.
