Autobiography of a scientist who rubbed up against the Nobel Prize.
Hirszfeld's biography reads like a fascinating historical novel. We become witnesses to his medical breakthroughs, which he almost paid with his life. He was a co-discoverer of the phenomenon of blood group inheritance. The nomenclature he introduced (A, B, AB, O) was adopted worldwide. He determined the Rh factor and discovered the cause of serological conflict. His second passion in life was his work as an educator. He raised many outstanding scientists.
The story of one life also contains a unique picture of the Warsaw Ghetto, as seen through the eyes of a doctor.
Prof. Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954) - outstanding bacteriologist, serologist and immunologist, humanist and patriot; founder of the Polish school of immunology, founder of the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw.
