De multiplici siclo et talento hebraico. Item de mensuris hebraicis, tam aridorum quam liquidorum.
His praemissa est epitome de ponderibus & mensuris, quae apud profanos leguntur auctores, ex Budaeo potissimum desumpta. Invenies hic multa hactenus nostri saeculi hominibus incognita. (1st ed.). Antwerpiae 1568. ex Officina Christophori Plantini. (18 x 12 cm), pp. 163, [3], signet printed on title page and vignettes in woodcut, card binding. 19th c.
(Estr. T. 17). Dedication to Stanislao Miloshevio S.R.M. a Secretis. The work offered here, "De multiplici..." is the main and most extensive work of the Author, in Polish translation: On the various shekels and the Hebrew talent on the system of liquid and fixed measures, on ancient numismatics (not only Hebrew). The work devoted to the issues of ancient metrology "...stood at the high level of knowledge of the time, demonstrated the full research independence of the author. .. A purely analytical work. .. Also valuable is the use of economic criteria in determining the value of monetary units, or the system of measurements. The pioneering importance of the book was evidenced by its reprinting in 1693 in the collection of Thomas Cruse." (PSB. T. IX). Stanislaw Grzepski (Grzebski) (born 1524 in Grzebsko (formerly Grzepsk) near Mlawa, died 1570), mathematician, classical philologist (Greekist), historian, numismatist and professor at the Academy of Cracow. He enjoyed the widespread sympathy of the most prominent Polish intellectuals of the time: Jan Kochanowski, Stan. Karnkowski, Stan. Hosius, Marcin Kromer, Jan Rheticus and others. Grzepski amassed a valuable book collection, which was unfortunately dispersed. The scholar survived long in the tradition of the University of Krakow; ".... its expression was a beautiful biography by J. Brozek, crossed out around 1640..." (PSB. T. IX). Stamp on title page, traces of non-moisture and yellowing, rubbing of binding. Good condition. Very rare.
