GRZEGORZ SZTWIERTNIA studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow from 1987 to 1992, where he received his diploma in the studio of Prof. Jerzy Nowosielski. He currently teaches at his alma mater. Since 1992 he has been associated with Zderzak Gallery in Cracow. In 1994, he received a bronze medal in the "Bielska Jesień" competition. He works in drawing, painting, installation and carries out artistic actions. He writes and publishes texts that are an important part of his artistic strategy. He lives and works in Cracow.
In the works of Grzegorz Sztwiertnia, the issues of extreme experience and discipline of the body and the question of perception run through. In some, the two themes are combined. From the beginning he was interested in medical experiments, surgeries, deformed body, places where the individual is separated from the community (hospitals, prisons, homeless shelters).
