The Tin Drum (German: Die Blechtrommel) - a novel by Günter Grass published in 1959, the first part of the so-called "Danzig Trilogy". The book entered the canon of German post-war literature. In 1979 there was a film adaptation directed by Volker Schlöndorff, which won an Oscar for best foreign language film.
The main protagonist of the novel, Oskar Matzerath, was commemorated in 2002 with a memorial-lava in Gdansk's Wrzeszcz district at Wybickiego Square. In 2015 it was decided that, in accordance with the original concept, the figure of Oskar would be joined by his late creator Günter Grass, with an inseparable pipe in hand and figures of a snail and a toad alluding to his work. The figure of the late Nobel laureate was unveiled on October 16, 2015.
