Seweryn Goszczyński (born November 4, 1801 in Ilińce near Humania, died February 25, 1876 in Lviv) - Polish social activist, revolutionary, writer and poet of Polish Romanticism. He became famous as an author of patriotic poems and one of the leading members of Andrzej Towianski's messianic group. He is known to his contemporaries especially for his poetic novel "The Castle of Kaniów" and his gothic novel "The King of the Castle." Along with Antoni Malczewski and Józef Bohdan Zaleski, he is counted among the "Ukrainian school" of Polish Romanticism.

"The Castle of Kaniów" constitutes a romantic poem and is a typical example of Polish black romanticism. It refers to the events of kolishchyna. It consists of three parts. The action takes place in Kaniów, Ukraine, and is full of gruesome and bloody events. Among the many characters of this frenetic novel are the Cossacks (Shvarka, Nebaba and their men, usually highwaymen), the evil Polish ruler of the castle, Orlika, who was married to him by deceit (then a murderess). The castle is destroyed at the end.

Rare!

A specimen with an interesting provenance: in two places the stamp "Jan Kanty Trzebinski in Radom".

In a few dotted places, missing texts were added in the era, writing in pencil and inkust. In the margin, an explanation of the person making the additions "Poems erased by protective censorship"-probably these are the additions of the owner, Jan Kanty Trzebinski.
