POEZYIE LITWIN
Edition by Alexander Yelovitsky
Paris 1834, pp. VIII, [2], 276, format 10 x 15 cm
Antoni Gorecki [1787-1861], poet, fabulist, came from a noble family, studied at Vilnius University, took part in the Napoleonic campaigns and the November Uprising, an émigré, befriended J. Lelewel and very close to A. Mickiewicz, also through family connection.
Gorecki "as a poet was a lyricist both in his direct expression of personal feelings and in his instant reaction to current events. His position in literature is a transition from classicism to romanticism [...]. Modeled on Nemtsevich, he enriched the pride of chivalry with current themes. Here he combined classical phraseology with realism of details and technical expressions of contemporary wars. This realism was valued by Mickiewicz, who considered Gorecki one of the most outstanding representatives of the poetry of the Napoleonic wars" (PSB, vol. VIII, p. 308).
An extensive t. of poetry, it includes, among others: "Songs written at the time of the Lithuanian uprising in 1831. To Adam Mickiewicz's traveling companion, 1831. To the Brothers who went to fight, 1833. The sacking of the gorge near Samo-Siera by the Polish army. Death of Zdraycy Oyczyzny. To the Polish Deputies, 1833".
