Maria Lesniewska, translator and editor, member of the Union of Polish Writers. She was born in 1914 in the Eastern Borderlands. She studied Romance studies and spent the war in Warsaw. She translated from four languages: English, French, Russian and German, and knew eight. She worked at the Literary Publishing House. Among her translations are works by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett and Colette. Among other works, she translated Simone de Beauvoir's "The Second Sex."
