An artistic phenomenon, not only on the Polish and even European scale, is the Janowska Group, bringing together non-elite artists, the "mining art bohemia". Especially in the past, it brought together outstanding artists. Four of them have risen to the rank of masters. And these are: Teofil Ociepka (1891-1978), Pawel Wróbel (1913-1984), Ewald Gawlik (1919-1994) and Erwin Sowka (born in 1936). They are Upper Silesians immersed in their regional tradition, as well as expressors of universal content.
With extraordinary interest, the Silesian artists, true and outstanding artists - but called "non-professionals" - observe various aspects of human functioning caught up in the universal being of everyday life and celebration, but also in special local and regional forms. In the album, which presents many color illustrations, Halina Gerlich, in an extensive text, discusses the paintings of selected artists showing human faces, silhouettes and landscapes.
