GDAŃSK. resolution of mayors and councillors of March 26, 1734 introducing martial law. St. bdb., dimensions 445x360 mm.
On February 22, 1734 the Saxon and Russian armies closed the siege ring around Danzig. This was one of the most important events of the War of the Polish Succession. King Stanislaw Leszczynski with his supporters took refuge behind the walls of Gdansk (the auctions of Wu-eL Antiquarian were selling period prints documenting this event). Danzig's martial law, enacted by the city council, came into effect. First and foremost were regulations of conduct for the time of regular artillery shelling of the city. Emergency signaling was established in the form of ringing bells - a corresponding rhythm of 12 beats. Provision was also made for the display of flags, and special lanterns at night. These signals differed depending on whether or not the shelling had caused a fire. A special mobilization system was created for the citizens of Gdansk, as well as dividing them into special fire groups.
