The Hermitage's collection of 19th century paintings is one of the largest outside of France.
This publication presents the works exhibited in the museum's halls and a significant portion of the paintings kept in storage. Chronologically, it covers almost a century-the earliest of the reproduced works date from the 1880s, the latest from the 1870s. These are works by ninety-two artists who are representatives of the main currents developing in French painting over the last century, before the emergence of the Impressionist group. The Hermitage collections acquaint us with the most characteristic and significant phenomena of the artistic life of France in the 19th century - an era rich in important historical and social transformations, a period of extremely intense and diverse explorations in the field of art.
