The book was written under interesting circumstances: before World War II, Poland, like many European societies at the time, was serious about having a colony. Hence the government expedition to Madagascar, realized in 1937, under the direction of Major Mieczyslaw Lepecki (adjutant of Marshal Pilsudski). Hence Fiedler's "secret" mission, which was commissioned by the Polish government - as an independent expert - to study the conditions and profitability of possible colonization and Polish settlement on the island. Of course, first and foremost Arkady Fiedler studied animals, described the habits of Madagascar's indigenous people and... photographed.
