Encyclopedia of book knowledge/ Wroclaw 1971/ Zaklad Narodowy im. Ossolińskich/ artistic binding in half leather/ p.XXII, szp. 2876/ black and white and color illustrations on separate chalk pages/ pasted exlibiris on front pastedown/ very good condition.


Artistic binding by Dominika Swiatkowska (signed with sticker on rear pastedown) olive half leather. Spine highlighted with raised gussets, divided into three fields, in one the titlepage, in the other two a blind-embossed motif depicting a bookbinder at a bookbinding press, the whole compositionally closed with embossed borders; covers covered with hand-marbled paper; card trims hand-painted; painted scene depicting a reading nun and praying monks on the side card trims; floral motifs on the side trims; book comes with a box.

The most comprehensive publication in the literature of the subject in Polish.Contains about 6000 factual, biographical, geographical, topographical and cross-reference entries. It covers the totality of modern knowledge in all fields concerning the book as a manuscript and polygraphic work of art and an object of reading, collecting and trade.

It provides information in the following fields: the history of writing, the history of manuscript and printed books, illumination and book illustration, the history of bindings and bookbinding, papermaking, printing, bookselling, the history of libraries, librarianship and library science, bibliophilism, bibliography, documentation, publishing issues and periodicals, illustration, the history of bindings. Also included are some related sciences, such as archival science, chronology, diplomatics, historical geography, etc. In general, the issue of EWoK concerns world book studies with special emphasis on Polish affairs.
