The eternal struggle between the sea and the native land, man's attachment to the land with the longing to wander the oceans, this struggle bursting the human soul in the North from ancient times up to Knut Hamsun's heroes, this is the problem and the elemental background of Sigurd Elkjaer's new novel as well. The heroine inherits her great affection for the sea and its people from her sailor father. The sea and the land stand in the way of her life in the form of a young wandering sailor, a regular on the five seas, and a man quietly settled on the land, between which she is forced to choose. The novel, though an epic portrayal of islanders' lives on a remote Danish island, must appeal to every human heart with the even depth of its characters' depiction, as well as its almost religious worship of daily work. Siegfried Elkjaer's story took part in the London International Literary Competition in 1936 as the best contemporary Danish novel.
