TIMBUKTU - a city in Mali on the Niger River, probably founded at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. For centuries Timbuktu was the center of intensive trade between Black Africa and Berber and Islamic North Africa, and through it also with Europe. In the 14th century it was the richest city in the world, with a university and rich book collections. Because of the city's relative inaccessibility, a semi-mythical image of Timbuktu as a distant and exotic place became widespread.
