Written in 1931-34, Maria Dabrowska's life work Noce i dnie is an outstanding and complex work. For in it there is a broad historical background, the history of several generations of noble families, as well as social and moral issues. However, psychological issues from the circle of human philosophy come to the fore ( especially in the first and second volumes ). The main issue here is - masterfully carried out - the juxtaposition of two attitudes : one - open to the outside, life-affirming, active and the other - closed in on itself, distrustful, passive and reflective. A great novel by an outstanding Polish writer.
