Very rare!
The most important travel work of William Coxe (1747-1828) English historian, one of the most famous European travelers of the 18th century. Anaccount of a journey made through northern Europe in 1784-1786, during which the author visited primarily Poland and Russia, where he was received by King Stanislaw Augustus and Polish magnates, and stayed quite long in Warsaw.
Volume I contains an extensive description of Poland, covering more than 100 pages, illustrated with aportrait of Stanislaw August Poniatowski and a fold-out map of Poland by British engraver Thomas Kitchin. The rest of volume one and part of volume two is taken up by an extensive description of Russia, enriched with Kitchin's fold-out map of Russia, plans of Moscow and St. Petersburg, also a portrait of Tsarina Catherine II.
The remainder of volume two is filled with an account of travels inSweden and Denmark illustrated with maps of both countries, a portrait of King Gustav III, and plans ofStockholm andCopenhagen , among others.
