William Desborough Cooley (c. 1795 - 1883) was an Irish geographer. Discoveries made by European explorers gradually showed that many of his theories about Central Africa, though strongly held, were wrong. In other disputes, it is believed that his position had some justification. His main contributions are now seen as related to his criticism of the sources of historical records, his understanding of West Africa, and as an insightful historian of globalization.
