The first of five collections of short stories about the adventures of detective Sherlock Holmes, published after two novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. As in the aforementioned titles, Holmes solves unusual and complicated criminal puzzles, using primarily the method of deduction. In deciphering the problems, the detective is also helped by his knowledge of psychology, chemistry, law, sensational literature, as well as police chronicles of accidents and an inseparable pipe, and sometimes playing the violin. In addition, thanks to his outstanding physical prowess, he is able to emerge unscathed from the most difficult oppressions. In action he is accompanied by Dr. Watson, a friend and chronicler of all significant achievements.
