A "set of Historical Sketches" comprising six series by Ludwik Kubala (1838-1918) - a prominent historian, writer, columnist, head of the Pawlikowski Library in Lvov. Series 1 and 2. Includes treatises such as: Siege of Lvov in 1648; Siege of Zbaraż and Peace at Zborov; Pushkin's Messenger to Poland; Battle of Beresteczko; Kostka-Napierski; Radziejowski trial; First "Liberum veto"; Zhvania expedition. Series 3 The history of the Polish-Russian war, or rather its first phase from 1654-1655 (the war lasted until 1667 and ended with Poland's loss of the entire Zadneprzan Ukraine) Series 4 The first Polish detailed study of the Swedish Deluge by Ludwik Kubala (1838-1918), historian, publicist, head of the Pawlikowski Library in Lviv. The author bases his study on sources different from those used so far, which allows one to better understand why the until recently so powerful Republic of Poland fell so easily into the hands of a foreign monarch. It was a painful lesson from which the Poles learned, and twenty-odd years later, having defeated the Swedes, Cossacks and Muscovites, they achieved victory at Chocim and marched to the relief of Vienna (from the introduction). The fold-out illustrations show views and battle scenes according to engravings by E. Dahlbergh. series 5. Detailed characterization of the events of 1656-1657, including the three-day battle of Warsaw in July 1656, (concluded with the maxim: "The Republic of Poland suffered a great defeat and this was due to the fact that, being able to destroy the enemy and end the Swedish war in one fell swoop, it had to continue the war with the Swede and the Brandenburger after this unfortunate battle, who not only consolidated to the detriment of the Republic in the possession of princely rights, but gained state independence"). This is followed by a description of the Treaty of Vilnius, the Treaty of Vienna, the invasion of George Rákóczi, the death of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, and the Treaty of Welawsko-Bydgoski. The last chapter is dedicated to Queen Louisa Maria, who, "Stubborn and adversity not deterred, not regretting the expense and expense, pursued a cause foreign and even hostile to the interests of the Republic." Series 6. Monograph detailing the two Danish-Swedish wars of 1657-1659 and the Peace of Oliva concluded in 1660. Uniform luxury binding in cherry half leather with gold embossing on the spine. Minor partial discoloration of the cloth of the back cover of item 1, minor stains and abrasions, otherwise very good condition. A nice piece.
