The Women's Voluntary Legion (OLK) - a Polish volunteer military organization formed in Lviv in 1918 by women wishing to fight for Poland's independence. Members of the organization took part in the battle for Lviv during the Polish-Ukrainian War and the Polish-Bolshevik War, including the battle for Vilnius. Initially, Lviv women formed a volunteer women's militia that functioned as part of the city's Civic Guard. The women performed administrative, courier and guard duty, as well as auxiliary functions, but as the conflict intensified, they also fought like regular male soldiers. In December 1918, the City Command transformed the women's militia into a strictly military formation, barracked and equipped, armed and uniformed, which was officially named the Women's Volunteer Legion. Dr. Aleksandra Zagórska, who was the first commandant of the OLK female couriers, is considered the initiator and organizer of the formation.
