New Athens the first Polish universal encyclopedia, authored by Fr. Benedykt Chmielowski. The encyclopedia had two editions, the first in 1745-1746 and the second, supplemented and expanded, in 1754-1764. Fr. Chmielowski's encyclopedia has a factual arrangement, i.e. the entries are not arranged alphabetically, but are grouped into thematic sections. The news covering more than a dozen fields of knowledge is taken from more than a hundred authors, ranging from the ancients, such as Pliny the Elder, to his contemporaries; many of them are accompanied by the author's commentary, which is not devoid of criticism, in others the author cites prominent personalities of antiquity to brand his own insights.
