The author of this magnificent book printed in a Venetian workshop in 1598 is Cesare Vecellio. He joined the workshop of his famous cousin Titian before 1548, and published books from 1570 onward. The book originally contained 420 woodcuts depicting costumes by Christopher Krieger. It is the culmination of a trend that began in the mid-16th century with a series of costume engravings by Enea Vico. The first part of the book depicts European clothing, including Ottoman Turkey, while the second part depicts costumes from Africa and Asia, including Persian, Moorish and Arabic.
The auction offers a single page from the book, framed in a white passe-partout frame with a gold border. The frame is double, opening.
