The Thoughtful Nobleman Don Quixote of Mancha is considered the first modern European novel. It is undoubtedly the most outstanding work of this author, permanently established in world culture. Its protagonist, a poor nobleman Alozo Quijano of Mancha, utterly absorbed in reading chivalric romances, falls into madness, assumes the name of Don Quixote and, in a grotesque disguise, on a miserable horse Rosinante, sets out into the world to, like the knights of old, defend the weak and defenseless and right the wrong. He chooses the peasant Sanczo Panza as his squire, while he makes the village girl Dulcinea of Toboso his lady of the heart. Don Quixote does not reckon with reality, he lives his dreams and ideals, fights battles with giants and sorcerers, and as such has permanently inscribed himself in the collective consciousness. The figure of the romantic erroneous knight, fighting windmills, has become a symbol of a dreamy, noble attitude, built against the mundanity of everyday affairs.
