The publication was issued on the occasion of the exhibition "Aurea Porta Rzeczpospolitej" and covers all areas of Gdansk art from the mid-15th to the end of the 18th century. In individual sections named: St. Mary's Church; Artus Court; Catholicism-Protestantism; Artists in the service of the city; Civic virtues; Republic of scholars; For the king, magnates, church; Polish nobleman and foreigner in Gdansk-are included side by side with paintings, sculptures, grilles, clocks, furniture, weapons, graphics, goldsmiths, ceramics. All these objects serve to illustrate the thesis contained in the title of each group. It was the understandable ambition of the authors to present the latest state of research and scientific achievements of both the Gdansk community and colleagues working in other cities. The book is a state-of-the-art synthesis of Danzig art, and its various sections are covered by prominent specialists in the field.
