The poignant works were written under the influence of untrue information, as it later turned out, about the death of Broniewski's wife in Auschwitz (Maria Zarębińska-Broniewska died in 1947 as a result of an illness she contracted while in a concentration camp).
The text is decorated with artistic illustrations by Olga Siemaszko (1911-2000).
