Censorship confiscated the printed edition of the book. Only a few pieces managed to be salvaged [...]" (M. Urbanek "Broniewski", War. 2011, pp. 84-85). Having handed one of the salvaged pieces to M. Piechal, the author is supposed to have said, "I managed to snatch a few pieces of my 'Paris Commune' from the mouth of the censors". (ibid., p. 86).
The work was written in mid-December 1928. "The poem was the result of Broniewski's interest at the time in the history of the 1870 Paris struggle in connection with a planned historical study or novel [...]. The current importance of 'Paris Commune' was fully appreciated by the censors by confiscating the print run of the 1929 edition. Only a few pieces were saved from confiscation, and they circulated among readers in copies [...]. The full text of 'The Paris Commune' appeared in 'Culture of the Masses' printed in the USSR and in 'A Selection of Poetry' published in Moscow in 1932." (F. Lichodziejewska "Twórczość W. Broniewskiego", War. 1973, p. 127). In 1947, based on one of the surviving pieces of the first edition, a poem was published with the same illustrations.
