Decorated by Jan Bukowski
"Bukowski's typographic realizations are a conscious reference to the typographic shape of Polish Renaissance books, both as far as the ornamentation and the calm, classical layout of the column are concerned, the most prominent example of which is the monumental edition of Bogurodzica developed by Bukowski" (J. Sowiński "Sztuka typograficzna Młodej Polski", Wr. 1982, p. 130).
Jan Bukowski (1873 - 1943) illustrator, painter, makeup artist and draftsman associated with the Young Poland movement. He collaborated with Stanisław Wyspiański on many occasions. He specialized in book illustration, typography and wood engraving. Bukowski was under the strong current of Arts & Crafts and William Morris. Morris, however, relied on monochromatic ornaments, while Bukowski heavily stewarded color making his works In the Bogurodzica more like illuminations than the typographic bordellos of the 15th century from which they both drew inspiration.
