[AWANGARDA]. BLOCK. Revue d'Art. Warsaw. Editor. M[ieczyslaw] Szczuka, on the editorial committee: Teresa Żarnowerówna. 8. brochure.
No. 5: VII 1924. pp. 15, [1].
Slight rubbing of spine and cover, good condition. Single issue of one of the most important periodicals of the Polish interwar avant-garde. It was published between 1923 and 1926, 11 issues came out (in 8 issues) and was the organ of a constructivist art group under the same name. Issues of "Block" are offered at auction extremely rarely, this issue has not appeared on the market for the last quarter of a century. Issue 5 is extremely interesting from an artistic point of view: pp. 1 (cover) and 3 show geometric abstract compositions by Teresa Zarnowerówna, p. 2 shows Mieczyslaw Szczuka's photomontage "Kemal Pasha", p. 7 shows two scenographic compositions by Jan Golus and Walter Münz. Pp. 8-9 is devoted to "Examples of purely structural issues," where works by Władysław Strzeminski, Teresa Żarnowerówna and Mieczysław Szczuka are reproduced. The next two pages contain examples of typographic solutions ("Printmaking with layout"), and p. 14 presents abstract works by T. van Doesburg, C. van Eesteren, G. Hirschel-Protsch and W. Strzeminski. The issue also includes texts: "Italian Futurism" by F. T. Marinetti and "Renewal of Architecture" by Theo van Doesburg. Very rare - this issue of "Block" has not appeared at book auctions in Poland in the last 30 years!
