Edition 1 of the Bible in French translated from the Vulgate (the text of Scripture in Latin) by Pierre Frizon (1586-1651) - doctor of theology, penitentiary and canon of the church of Reims. At the beginning of the introduction - a dedication to "the very Christian King Louis XIII of France", the text of Scripture is divided into two volumes, at the end with separate pagination an extensive treatise by the translator on the differences between Catholic and Huguenot (Evangelical) editions (translations) of the Bible. Due to the monumental nature of the offered edition of the Scriptures, the work is enriched with more than 70 engravings with scenes referring to the text of the holy book, portraits of prophets and apostles, and 2 maps, about half of which were made by Jan Ziarnko (ca. 1575-ca. 1630) - a painter, engraver and illustrator born in Lviv, circa 1600. went to France, where he perfected his craft, worked in Paris, known there as Jean le Grain, valued for his workshop and thematic versatility (he executed religious scenes, historical scenes, portraits, views), achieving high professional status, in France he remained until his death. His artistic stature is best evidenced by his participation in illustrating this prestigious and editorially huge book. Abrasions of the covers, traces of cracks on the spines, traces of light dampstaining of a few initial pages of vol. 1, otherwise blocks nicely preserved, high quality, superbly rebound engravings. See Potocki Antoni - Catalogue of the works of Jan Ziarnka the Polish painter and engraver of the 16th and 17th centuries. : with a biography of the artist, Cracow 1911.
