Published in 1916 by the Berlin publishing house Dietrich Reimer Ernst Vohsen, Bernhard Moritz's work Bilder aus Palästina, Nord-Arabien und dem Sinai is one of the most interesting works of this outstanding orientalist and linguist. Thanks to his numerous trips to Syria and ancient Mesopotamia, and above all, being the director of the Palace Library in Cairo, he had the opportunity to describe in detail the topography of Egypt, Hijaz (northern Arabia) and Sinai. Moritz's publication is the result of these trips. It consists of more than 100 photos with captions and dates and a 16-page text in German. The loose pages are housed in a cover with printed Arabic-style ornamentation and a gilded title - Nord-Arabien und Sinai.
The photographs come from Moritz's expeditions to the Middle East, which he made between 1905 and 1915. Most of the photos were taken by the future professor at Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin personally, but photographs from areas he could not reach - primarily the Hijaz with Mecca and Medina, then inaccessible to Europeans - were provided by his Turkish friends. Among the cards are views of Jerusalem, Islam's holy cities of Mecca and Medina (including a plan of that city), the Hejaz and Jiddah in Saudi Arabia, Petra in Jordan and Mount Sinai. The photographs also show the construction of the railroad from Damascus to Mecca and Medina (completed in 1908), views of temple interiors, mosques and archaeological remains. Moritz and the Turkish photographers also depicted genre scenes: groups of Arabs on the streets of Medina and in small villages, railroad builders, nomads and pilgrims to Mecca.
A rare photographic record of important sites and geographical features in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Palestine. Most of the photos are based on photographs taken by the orientalist and linguist Bernhard Moritz during his travels through the area in 1905-1915. For the areas that the author could not visit (the northern part of the Hijaz, Mecca and Medina), the author relied on photographs taken by Turkish friends. The images include, among others: scenes showing the construction of the Hijaz railway between Damascus and Mecca and Medina, views of Medina, Mecca, Jeddah, Petra and Jerusalem.
