Sentimental novel, telling the story of the tragically ended love of two children raised in a "state of nature", away from civilization on the island of Ile de France [now Mauritius] . The popularity of this novel was so great that during the author's lifetime it already lived to see about 300 illegitimate editions, and even Napoleon Bonaparte did not part with it during his stay on Elba.It was first published in 1788.
