He studied in Uppsala and became an associate professor of physical chemistry. He developed the theory of electrolytic dissociation. He worked on the properties of toxins and antitoxins, chemical kinetics (including the Arrhenius equation), the study of the temperatures of the planets and the solar corona, and the study of the aurora borealis. From 1897 to 1905, he was rector of Stockholm University (then Stockholms högskola). In 1903 he received theNobel Prize in Chemistry for his development of the theory of electrolytic dissociation. In 1907 he developed the theory of panspermia concerning theorigin of life on Earth.
