Johann Arnt (orchestrated by Arndt) (1555-1621) German Lutheran theologian of the Orthodox period, author of devotional literature. Arndt's greatest work, "Six Books on True Christianity," was written in 1605-1609, and was first published in Polish in 1743, translated by Pastor Samuel Tschepius. In the second half of the 19th century, Arndt's work was published more than a dozen times by the Königsberg publishing house Hartung. In his teaching, Arndt stressed the importance of true imitation of Christ, mystical union with him and the practical development of Christian virtues. "The 'Six Books'" were read by simple peasants and craftsmen, teachers and clerks, as well as residents of manors and palaces. Every significant Lutheran had his own piece of this nearly thousand-page book. Some knew much of it by heart, and most, in addition to the Bible and Luther's Small Catechism, recognized only the works of this author. ( after J.B. Kozlowski, "On the Essence of Mazurian Gromadkarism")
