Illustrated by Erna Rosentein
Erna Rosentein - painter and poet, also created drawings and assemblages. From 1932 to 1934 she studied at the Wiener Frauen Akademie, and from 1934 to 1936 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Wojciech Weiss. She was associated with the milieu of the Cracow Group, and had a particularly close artistic friendship with Jonasz Stern. She sympathized with the leftist movement. During the war she was in the Lvov ghetto, and after the tragic death of her parents she hid in Warsaw. The memory of her traumatic wartime experiences ran throughout her work. In 1957 she became a member of the reactivated Krakow Group. From 1949 she lived in Warsaw. Erna Rosenstein's work, which is very personal, poetic and completely free of any restrictions and influences, is situated within the boundaries of broadly conceived surrealism.
