Description:

Issue 1.

"The life of a wealthy Volyn citizenry in the early 19th century. Memoirs led up to 1832, i.e., to the liquidation of the Krzemieniecki Lyceum" (Polish Biographical Dictionary)

Antoni Andrzejowski, pseudonym: Stary Detiuk, (1785-1868) - Polish naturalist, botanist, geologist, memoirist and writer.

Born in Warkowicze near Dubna in Volhynia. Son of Lukasz a poor nobleman, cashier of the bank of Antoni Prota Potocki, and mother of Sobinskis. He was brought up at the court of the castellaness Bierzyńska in Ludwipol, and later at the court of Sieradz voivode Michał Walewski, where his father was ruler of the estate and marshal of the court. He received his first education in Korc and Tuczyn (under the direction of F. Szopowicz). He finished school in Miedzyrzecz Korecki. In 1801 (after the death of his father), he was sent by Alexander Chodkiewicz to Vilna for further study of drawing. Under the guidance of Jędrzej Śniadecki, he studied natural sciences and painting with J. Oleszkiewicz. During this time, he privately received lectures on botany and zoology from Stanislaw Boniface Jundziel and lessons in anatomy.

In 1806 he moved to Krzemieniec, studying botany there with Franciszek Scheidt and Willibald Besser. He was a lecturer in natural sciences at the Krzemieniec High School, among others. He earned some extra money with drawing lessons, then from 1818 he became an assistant and later an adjunct to W. Besser at the botany and zoology department. In addition, he participated in the work of the Society of Youngsters of the Volyn Gymnasium Educating themselves in Orderly Speaking and Writing. His work benefited from his frequent trips to Volhynia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Podolia (years: 1816, 1818, 1822-1825 and 1830). He collected botanical and geological specimens. In 1832, as a result of the liquidation of the school in Krzemieniec by the Russian invaders, he moved with other Polish scientists from Krzemieniec to Kiev, where he took a job at Kiev University as an assistant to V. Besser (until 1839).

In 1839, dismissed by the Russian authorities for harboring a conspirator, he taught natural history at the Prince Bezborodka Lyceum in Nezhinsk (Chernihiv province). From 1852, already a pensioner, he settled first in Nemirov, then in Stavishchy (1856) in Ukraine at the home of Alexander Branicki, where he founded and tended his botanical garden, in the meantime devoting himself to writing.

He died on December 12, 1868 in Stavishchy.

Jerzy Moszyński coat of arms Nałęcz (1847-1924) - Polish publicist, conservative, landowner, politician and publisher.
