Adam Mickiewicz resided in Paris, almost continuously, since 1832. Until his fateful departure for Constantinople in 1855, the poet changed his address more than a dozen times. As Alina Witkowska writes, the Mickiewicz family "did not put down roots, did not bind themselves with sentiments to a place, usually looking for premises cheap [...], also spacious enough to accommodate children and provide a separate corner for the poet." It is difficult to suppose that an extensive library, taking up a lot of valuable space in rented apartments, could have wandered along with the poet. But also "Adam Mickiewicz was not a book collector and had no intention of consciously shaping his library" (H. Natuniewicz "Biblioteka Adama Mickiewicza" [in:] Yearbook of the A. Mickiewicz Literary Society 1971, p. 99), he treated it in a utilitarian way. His book collection was rather modest and finding pieces from it today poses serious difficulties.
