"The Den" - a novel dealing with the problem of prostitution, depicting the life of female residents of a brothel, was written in 1914 and was considered a scandalous book at the time. Today we perceive it differently: as an old-fashioned novel, but fraught and beautifully written, with an interesting plot and vivid psychological portraits. Kuprin touchingly describes the fate of unfortunate women, victims of the "world's oldest profession", which they are forced to practice for various reasons.
