A striking book composed of richly illustrated, alphabetically arranged entries presenting a cross-sectional view of the achievements of Polish illustration from 1918 to the present. They describe thematic areas and motifs appearing in illustrations, artistic techniques, stylistic tendencies, the most prominent illustrators of children's books and the most significant publishing series. The texts were compiled by eleven specialists dealing with the theory and practical dimensions of book illustration, graphic design or children's books. Their diverse specializations and areas of interest have given the book a varied, collage-like character.
The essence of the book is illustrations - more than 900 works by more than 200 Polish illustrators have been collected here. Among them are both recognized masters of illustration (including Bohdan Butenko, Adam Kilian, Zbigniew Rychlicki, Janusz Stanny, Jan Marcin Szancer, Franciszka Themerson) and contemporary artists of different generations (including Edgar Bak, Jan Bajtlik, Emilia Dziubak, Monika Hanulak, Marta Ignerska, Grażka Lange, Aleksandra and Daniel Mizielińscy, Marianna Oklejak, Paweł Pawlak).
