ACTA Eruditorum. N. XI. Lipsiae, XI 1683. 4, pp. 465-512, plate 1. binding wsp. pperg.
Very good condition. A single issue of the first scientific journal in the German lands, published in the years 1682-1782. The initiator of the periodical was G. Leibniz, and the editor and publisher was Otto Mencke. The purpose of "Acta Eruditorum" was to present scientific discoveries and review the works of prominent scholars (including I. Newton, G.W. Leibniz, J. Bernoulli) published at the time. Among the contributors to the journal was Pole Adam Adamandy Kochanski. The issue presented here contains, among other things, the first printing of Jan Hevelius' work "Historiola Cometae Anni 1683" (pp. 484-491). The astronomer tracked the course of the comet from his Gdansk observatory from July 30 to September 4, 1683, and devoted the results of these observations to the text presented here, supplementing it with a one and a half page table. The comet in question was discovered by English astronomer John Flamsteed on July 20, 1683, and was named after him. As of Sept. 5, 1683, it was not visible in the sky.
