Acknowledgements to Valery Roman the first governor of Polesie Land, later senator of the Republic of Poland [1922].

The object of the auction is two unique acknowledgments, in the form of a decorated card and a folder, from the people of Polesie Land and the local police apparatus to the then governor Valery Roman ( who was sent as a government delegate to Central Lithuania in April 1922).

Walery Roman was a Polish lawyer, state activist, senator of the Republic of Poland in 1928-1935. From the beginning he was associated with the camp of Józef Piłsudski, and represented the interests of Suwałkians in the difficult years of 1918-19 , heading a delegation, traveling to Belvedere and Paris to establish the Polish-Lithuanian demarcation line and free Suwałki from German occupation. He moved on to work in state administration. He was the first voivode of Polesie (from March 14, 1921 to May 3, 1922), and on April 20, 1922 became government delegate for Central Lithuania - Vilnius, a position he held until August 29, 1924. After the May coup, he wasamong the closest associates of Jozef Pilsudski. He participated in the work of several collegiate bodies, operating at the central authorities. From 1928 to 1935, he served two terms in the Senate, elected from the list of the Nonpartisan Bloc for Cooperation with the Government in the Białystok province. He was vice-chairman of the BBWR Parliamentary Club, head of the BBWR group in the Senate and chairman of the Senate Administrative and Local Government Commission. His biography can be found in the book, "Do you know who this is" published by the Main Military Bookstore in Warsaw in 1938 (p.624, also pictured).

, "To His Lordship Valery Roman the First Governor of Polesie Land grateful residents of all nationalities, states and professions on May 24, 1922 offer.

Distinguished and Venerable Mr. Governor.

Our Polesie Land flowed with blood and tears at the moment when Providence allowed us to return from under Tsarist bondage to the bosom of the resurrected Republic of Poland.

It was necessary to build a new life on the site of ruins and ruins, and here - this great and so difficult task - was taken over by You, Venerable Governor.

And although your stay among us was all too short, you can look upon your work with pride.

For thanks to your care and work this country is recovering from the collapse of war and slavery: prosperity is slowly returning, education is spreading, a sense of civic duty to work and the rule of law is growing, the dignity and recognition of Polish state authority is growing, all the nationalities of the land are coming to us, because you - faithful to the beautiful traditions of the Free Republic - ensured them justice and equal rights without distinction of faith and origin....

You yourself were for all of them the model of a civil servant, citizen, Pole, and finally an understanding superior and best friend-colleague.

That is why in the history of the Polesie land your name Homeland is written in golden letters, because you laid an unbreakable foundation for the rebirth of Polesie.

It is based on Your work and on Your wise and just rule, and has the fountain of immortality, because in it is Your heart and our hearts. We will lead the Earth we love together to glory and power along the paths you have marked out....

With this pledge we bid you farewell, Mr. Governor, at the moment when, called by a higher order, you are leaving where the bard came from, who cried out:

" I love the whole nation....

I want to lift it up, make it happy,

I want to amaze the whole world with it.''

And since these words are also Your motto, therefore may Your work lift and strengthen the Nation, as You have exemplified in the Land of Polesie.

Go, therefore, and do''- in the Land of Vilnius- and keep in Thy Heart the memory and those who in token of appreciation, gratitude and tribute to Thee affix their signatures below.

Acknowledgements from senior police officers and officials of District XIY, made in the form of a decorative folder with wishes. On the left side of the folder : wishes (along with about 35 signatures) , pasted four photos (from the left: the building of the Polish provincial office, bust of Valery Roman, police headquarters, and at the very bottom a group photo of PP officers, against the background of the headquarters). Patriotic and legion motifs incorporated in the background. On the right side of the folder: pasted-in and hand-painted wooden coat of arms of the Brzesko-Lithuanian Province.

By a decree of the Higher Order, appointed as Administrator of Polesia, you dedicated your work Venerable and Dignified Governor! For the sake of our resurrected Homeland, for the rebuilding of Polesia dripping with blood - and here, although after such a short time of working together with you, we can all see how abundant the yield was, because you, Distinguished Governor, love this Land with all your heart.

Understanding that for its welfare and development it is necessary to secure internal order and order, throughout your work you have been interested in the development of the Police and the living conditions of its officers.

Understanding that such a young institution cannot stand abhorred on the level of excellence, you, Distinguished Governor, with your concern for its proper development and forbearance, were able to win its heart and true recognition for yourself.

M senior officers of the P.P. and officials of the XIY- Polesie District bid you farewell with sincere regret, wishing you happiness on the further path of your life, and, although fate does not allow us to carry further hardships for the reconstruction of the Fatherland under your leadership, we will go on working faithful to the principles you outlined, proud and happy that our Fatherland has such Citizens as you are, Venerable and Dignified Governor.
