Author Louis Réau (1881-1961) was an art historian and director of the French Institute in St. Petersburg. The work consists of two extensive volumes. The first is a history of Russian art from its roots to the time of Peter I. The second, on the other hand, is a continuation up to the author's contemporary times. Both volumes are supplemented by an extensive specialized Russian-French dictionarycontaining phrases and proper names in the field of art and culture in the broadest sense.
