Exceptionally illustrated classic post-partition history of Poland by August Sokolowski (1846-1921). Volume three in the series, of four in the set dealing with Poland from the defeat of the November Uprising in 1831 to 1908, despite the title on the cover, 1831-1861. Theillustrations complementing the text are from the most outstanding Polish historical painters of the period :Jan Matejko, Wojciech Gerson, Michał Stachowicz, Jan Rozen, Józef Ryszkiewicz, Juliusz and Wojciech Kossak . There are paintings of mansions, cities, but above all of lesser and more famous figures. The last illustration in the text is a portrait of Roman Dmowski, just elected deputy to the Russian Duma. Edition including, table of contents and engravings, drawings and copies from paintings.
