Abeautifully gilded treatise on the Imitation of Jesus Christ by Thomas a Kempis (c. 1380-1471 ) monk, canon regular, theologian and mystic. The text is in French, translated and edited by Father Hugues de Lamennais (1782-1854). The work contains reflections on how to follow Jesus and lead a rich spiritual life, and what the sacrament of the Eucharist is. The treatise is beautifully illustrated with a signed frontispiece engraving depicting a rare scene of the little Jesus helping St. Joseph, at the carpenter's work. The entire book ends with a detailed table of contents.
Period binding, full dark brown gilt and embossed leather with a checkerboard pattern on the front and back covers in bdb condition with minimal rubbing on the corners; spine embossed with title; beautiful colored pastedown on paper gilt with signets on the binding leather; interior in bdb condition; all page edges are gilt; all in cardboard case; overall bdb condition.
