Exceptionally illustrated classic post-partition history of Poland by August Sokolowski (1846-1921). Volume two of the series, part two of four in a set dealing with Congress Poland, that is, the period from Nicholas I's assumption of the throne in 1825 to the defeat of the November Uprising in 1831 .Theillustrations supplementing the text are from the most prominent Polish historical painters of the period :Jan Matejko, Wojciech Gerson, Michał Stachowicz, Jan Rozen, Józef Ryszkiewicz, Juliusz and Wojciech Kossak . These are paintings of mansions, cities, but above all of lesser and more famous figures such as Franciszek Koss, who in 1812, on orders from Napoleon himself, was said to have tried to blow up the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Edition including, table of contents and engravings, drawings and copies from paintings, and 2 color plates of Polish troops under Alexander I and Nicholas I .
