Exceptionally illustrated classic history of Poland by August Sokolowski (1846-1921). Volume one of a complete series of six on Piast Poland. The illustrations complementing the text are from the most prominent Polish historical painters of the time: Jan Matejko, Wojciech Gerson, Franciszek Smuglewicz, Walery Eljasz Radzikowski, Juliusz Kossak. Warsaw edition containing, table of contents and engravings, drawings and copies from paintings, and a family tree of the Piasts.

Period binding, beautiful green gilt cartonage, in db condition with minimal loss and rubbing, especially at edges; on front cover, in addition to floral patterns, gilt portrait of Queen Jadwiga according to Jan Matejko; spine embossed and gilded with title; interior in db condition, flawless, only two pages with family tree of the Piasts loose; boards in bdb condition; overall db condition.
