First French edition with translation from English by Jules Leclercq and his preface. Author Florence Crauford Grove (1838-1902) was one of the greatest mountaineers of his era. He made the first ascent of the Rothorn de Zinal, and the Aiguille de Bionassay in the Mont-Blanc massif. In 1874 he had just realized the first ascent of Elbrus, the highest peak in the Caucasus, during an expedition whose description is the content of the book being sold. A unique description of the journey and a kind of mountaineering guide to the mountains of the Caucasus more than 140 years ago.
