A lavishly illustrated edition of the Author's famous novel "The Mysterious Island". The text splendidly decorated with 154 illustrations byJules-Descartes Férat (1829-1906) painter, draughtsman and engraver belonging to Verne's so-called great illustrators, engraved by Charles Barbat (1844-1921), one of the most famous wood engravers of the era. The item for sale is one of the first editions of the famous Jules Hetzel (1814-1886) publishing house, which was also the first to publish Jules Verne's famous novels in the famous Romantic and Cartonage binding versions.

Period binding, decorated and gilt brown half leather in db condition with some rubbing and loss at corners; spine gilt and embossed with title and geometric-plant designs; all pages are gilt at edges; inside db condition, some pages yellowed characteristic of 19th and early 20th century works; overall db condition.
